Winter Recharge – 2022 Melbourne Beach

We couldn’t take it any longer, this year was especially cold and nasty. With an ice storm approaching, we set out to brave the elements and get ourselves to Florida. This time, however, we drove, making a layover in Birmingham.

We weren’t going to let anything stop us though. Not a mysterious allergic reaction, and definitely not getting sunburnt in the car. (Didn’t see that one coming.)

When we finally got to our rental this was the view, the family was so surprised at just how close we were to the beach. The only thing that separated us from the waves, was the tide berm and the steps down. We got to enjoy this view every morning from the deck looking east over the Atlantic Ocean.

We were outside the break and directly on the Atlantic so the waves were crashing all day and all night making the most peaceful relaxing sound we had all heard in a long time. The weather was so nice that we even left the windows open and let the fresh ocean air in and were lulled to sleep each night by the waves.

The boys started with their obligatory giant hole in the sand and we made our traditional sand ‘snowman’.

After that we did nothing in particular for the next couple days but play in the sand and waves and soak up whatever sun peeked its way through the overcast clouds. Being in a rental in Florida had its perks too. We just ordered grocery delivery from the local Publix to the house and loaded up the fridge with the essentials to get us through the long weekend. We even got to see a SpaceX launch, which was quite the sight. Several of us went out for Sushi, and Rachel and Phillip even had a date night in town. We buried the kids in the sand and boogie boarded in the waves.

All in all it was such a relief to get away. Little did we know what was ahead of us for the drive home. An ice storm all across the country passing right through our way home. We actually ended up getting stuck outside Rogersville, AK and had to put ourselves up in a hotel for the night. The next day the storm had passed, and we made that final run back home, but what a memory maker it was for sure.
